New homeowner does late-night DIY renovations, dismisses neighbors’ complaints, until they take it to the council and get the noise rules changed: 'Now, work has to stop by 8:00 PM'

I understand you may want to fix up your place as quickly as possible, but that doesn't mean you can do it at any hour of the day… or night.

Home renovations require a lot of hard work and are exhausting. Especially if you're the one in charge of your own house renovations, you have the freedom to work on your own schedule and speed things up if you want to. But that freedom shouldn't keep your entire neighborhood awake in the process.

  • A friend of mine is “mildly infuriated” that he can’t keep his neighbors awake until midnight anymore.

    My friend was venting to me today about his "nightmare" neighbors in his new, upscale neighborhood. He bought a fixer- upper and, since he has a contractor's license, he's been doing the renovations himself.

  • Sure, you can work whenever you want, but there are basic decency rules when you share a neighborhood. You're not living on an island; you're part of a community, and you should set reasonable limits on your actions for the sake of other people's well-being.   

  • The next night, they called again, claiming he was working without a permit or a pro. He got to have his "gotcha" moment by waving his license and permits in their faces.

  • The neighbors eventually tried to talk to him reasonably to ask for a ceasefire after 9:00 PM. His response? He basically told off because he wasn't them to technically breaking any laws.

  • Imagine having to explain basic respectful manners to your neighbor and getting that attitude in response. Instead of showing consideration, he was convinced he had every right to keep working as late as he pleased. Now that's a very questionable sense of entitlement. 

  • Well, the neighbors didn't take that sitting down. They spent the last week lobbing the town council, and they actually got the noise ordinance changed.

  • Not the easy way? Fine, the hard way then. Neighbors ended up giving him what he deserved with patience and class. They tried to reason with him, but they got nowhere, so they decided to take the matter through the proper channels. Now their concerns were heard, and they brought the peace back to the neighborhood.  

  • Now, work has to stop by 8:00 PM. My friend is absolutely livid that they "infringed on his rights," but I'm just sitting here mildly infuriated that he thinks being a licensed contractor makes it okay to be a world-class j to his new neighbors.

  • The only real outcome of his inconsiderate behavior is that now he officially can't work past 9 PM, in fact, not even past 8 PM! We'd like to think he learned a lesson, but he remains firmly convinced he's the victim in this story. Perhaps reality will catch up with him eventually.
